Skills

[ Character Options ]

The following skills are used in Novus Utum:

*: See below

In the list above, two skills are missing: Psicraft and Use Psionic Device. This is a deliberate omission. On Novus, due to the magic / psionic transparancy rules, Spellcraft and Psicraft are treated as being one and the same skill. This means a character can use Spellcraft for Psicraft and vice versa and the class is a class skill if either is. Likewise Use Magic Device and Use Psionic Device can be used as a singular skill. The details are described at the notes for the individual skills.

Special Rules for Specific Skills

Some of these skills have some special rules:

Bluff

Bluff cannot be used against other PC's. PC's either believe what you say or they do not. A bluff roll has no effect on this and you do not have to roll unless you are trying to deceive an NPC. However, you can use bluff in combat to feint, to create a distraction to hide or to deliver a secret message to a PC.

Concentration

All uses for concentration in the players handbook and the psionics handbook both apply.

Craft

As mentioned in the Players Handbook, craft is actually a number of separate skills, each with its own rank.

Unlike the craft skill in the book, you cannot use craft to create items or generate income. Instead the rules listed in the Income rules apply.

Craft does give you a reduction in price for items you can make yourself of 1% or 2% per rank, depending on the craft, plus 3 ranks if you have Skill Focus in that craft. Below is a list of possible crafts and the items they reduce the price of as well as the percentage. Note that the list below is not exhaustive. Other craft skills can exist. However, they require permission from the DM team to take.

Craft Skill Price Reduction (per rank) Items Affected
Craft: Alchemy 2% Acid, alchemists fire, antitoxin, smokestick, sunrod, tanglefoot bag, thunderstone, tindertwig
Craft: Armoursmithing * 1% All metal armours and shields including barding
Craft: Blacksmithing 2% All non-armour, non-weapon items made primarily of metal such as manacles, grappling hooks, pitons, climbers kit, locks, etc.
Craft: Bowmaking * 1% Mighty bows, crossbows, arrows, bolts
Craft: Leatherworking 2% Padded, leather, studded leather and hide armour including barding, slings, saps, saddles, bit and briddles, other non-armour, non-weapon items made primarily of leather
Craft: Masonry 1% Stone walls for buildings (but not the entire building, just the walls)
Craft: Poison 1% Poisons as per the DMG. Note that making and selling poison is illegal
Craft: Shipbuilding 1% Ships
Craft: Tailoring 2% All clothing, backpacks and bags.
Craft: Weaponsmithing * 1% All weapons except bows and slings.
Craft: Woodworking 2% Furniture for housing, block and tackle, chests, ladders, portable rams, and other non-weapon items made primarily of wood

*: Special note - to practice any craft creating weapons or armour requires a permit from the government.

Diplomacy

Diplomacy cannot be used against other PC's. PC's can choose whether or not to comply with your request, like you or help you, and a diplomacy check has no effect on this.

In general, the DM decides how high you need to roll (they need not tell you). The table in the PHB is a guideline, but not an absolute requirement. Many circumstances such as the NPC's mood, their purpose, profession, loyalty, etc. may influence the DC.

Disguise

Disguise is rolled once every time you put on a disguise and the roll becomes the DC for all observers. You cannot take 10 or take 20 on a Disguise check, nor may you reroll when creating a disguise. This is done to save from having to roll every few minutes.

Hide

There must be circumstances under which one can hide to use this skill. For example, in an open field, you cannot hide unless you have the Hide in Plain Sight ability.

Intimidate

Intimidate cannot be used against other PC's. PC's are either intimidated by you or they are not, as the player chooses. An intimidate roll has no effect on this and you do not have to roll unless you are trying to intimidate an NPC. However, you can use bluff in combat to demoralize a PC opponent.

Knowledge

As mentioned in the Players Handbook, knowledge is actually a number of separate skills, each with its own rank. There are exactly 11 different knowledge skills. Others do not exist. If you feel a major area is not covered by one of these skills, you may however petition the DM team to add more.

The following Knowledge skills exist:

  • Arcana (ancient mysteries, magic traditions, arcane symbols, cryptic phrases, constructs, dragons, magical beasts)
  • Architecture and engineering (buildings, aqueducts, bridges, fortifications)
  • Dungeoneering (aberrations, caverns, oozes, spelunking)
  • Geography (lands, terrain, climate, people)
  • History (royalty, wars, colonies, migrations, founding of cities)
  • Local (legends, personalities, inhabitants, laws, customs, traditions, humanoids)
  • Nature (animals, fey, giants, monstrous humanoids, plants, seasons and cycles, weather, vermin)
  • Nobility and royalty (lineages, heraldry, family trees, mottoes, personalities)
  • Psionics (psionic magic, psionic symbols, cryptic phrases, psionic creatures, magic traditions)
  • Religion (gods and goddesses, mythic history, ecclesiastic tradition, holy symbols, undead)
  • The planes (the Inner Planes, the Outer Planes, the Astral Plane, the Ethereal Plane, outsiders, elementals, magic related to the planes)

Because of the psionics / magic transparancy rule, there is some overlap between knowledge psionics and knowledge arcana. Both these skills provide a +2 synergy bonus to Spellcraft. Its effect stacks as normal for synergy bonusses. The synergy bonus from Autohypnosis and the bonus from the Autonomous feat applies only to Knowledge: Psionics, not Knowledge: Arcana.

Perform

As mentioned in the Players Handbook, perform is actually a number of separate skills, each with its own rank. There are exactly 10 different types of perform skills. Others do not exist. If you feel a major area is not covered by one of these skills, you may however petition the DM team to add more.

The following perform skills exist:

  • Act (comedy, drama, mime)
  • Comedy (buffoonery, limericks, joke-telling)
  • Dance (ballet, waltz, jig)
  • Juggle (juggling, hoola-hooping, hat tricks) – added 27 April 2013
  • Keyboard instruments (harpsichord, piano, pipe organ)
  • Oratory (epic, ode, storytelling)
  • Percussion instruments (bells, chimes, drums, gong)
  • Sing (ballad, chant, melody)
  • String instruments (fiddle, harp, lute, mandolin)
  • Wind instruments (flute, pan pipes, recorder, shawm, trumpet)

Unlike the perform skill in the book, you cannot use perform to generate income. Instead the rules listed in the Income rules apply.

You can still use perform to give a one-off performance or for any special abilities you may have such as bardic music.

Profession

As mentioned in the Players Handbook, profession is actually a number of separate skills, each with its own rank.

Unlike the profession skill in the book, you cannot use profession to generate income. Instead the rules listed in the Income rules apply.

Speak Language

Novus Utum has some special rules concerning languages and literacy. For details see Languages.

Spellcraft

In Novus Utum, Spellcraft and Psicraft are one singular skill and either name can be used interchangeably. Thus, Spellcraft can be used to identify Psionic powers and Psicraft can be used to identify Spells and special uses of one also go for the other.

You cannot have ranks in both Spellcraft and Psicraft. You have ranks in one or the other and it doesn't matter which one as the two are one and the same.

If you have 5 or more ranks in Knowledge: Arcana, you get a +2 bonus on Spellcraft. If you have 5 or more ranks in Knowledge: Psionics, you also get a +2 bonus on Spellcraft. The effect stacks as is normal with synergy bonusses.

If you have 5 or more ranks in Spellcraft you get a +2 synergy bonus on Use Magic Device. Since Use Magic Device and Use Psionic Device are the same skill (see there), you only get this bonus once however.

If you have 5 or more ranks in Use Magic Device, you get a +2 synergy bonus on Spellcraft checks to address scrolls and power stones. Since Use Magic Device and Use Psionic Device are the same skill (see there), you only get this bonus once however.

The Psionic Affinity feat does not exist. Instead use Magical Aptitude as it now does the same thing: provide a +2 bonus to Spellcraft.

Psions get a +2 bonus on Spellcraft when dealing with a power or effect from his discipline, but not when dealing with spells or effects. Likewise, Specialist Wizards get such a bonus when dealing with spells or effects from their school, but not when dealing with psionic powers. Specialist Wizards take a -5 penalty when dealing with a spell or effect from a prohibited school (but not regarding psionics). Spellcraft is a class skill for all classes who have Psicraft as a class skill.

Tumble

Unlike the tumble skill in the book, you cannot use tumble to generate income. Instead the rules listed in the Income rules apply.

Use Magic Device

In Novus Utum, Use Magic Device and Use Psionic Device are a singular skill and either name can be used interchangeably. Thus, Use Magic Device can be used to activate a dorje and Use Psionic Device can be used to activate a scroll or wand. Special uses in one go for the other and vice versa.

You cannot have ranks in both Use Magic Device and Use Psionic Device. You have ranks in one or the other and it doesn't matter which one as the two are one and the same.

If you have 5 or more ranks in Spellcraft you get a +2 synergy bonus on Use Magic Device. Since Spellcraft and Psicraft are the same skill (see there), you only get this bonus once however.

If you have 5 or more ranks in Use Magic Device, you get a +2 synergy bonus on Spellcraft checks to address scrolls and power stones. Since Spellcraft and Psicraft are the same skill (see there), you only get this bonus once however.
