Magic Item Crafting

[ Feats ]

This page describes the rules for creating magic items in Novus Utum. For the rules for the Craft skill and income from craft skills, see Craft

The new rules for magic item creation are two-fold. First, significantly reduced the number of Item Creation feats, combining many feats together to form more usable feats that offer a wider array of options for magic item creation.

Secondly, we changed the way in which magic items can be created to be more in line with the economic system and experience influx of Novus Utum. This means magic items will be more expensive to create, but will no longer use experience.

Note that there are also options to create Customized Magic Items, which have some specific rules and limitations.

Creating Magic Items

In the regular D&D rules, players pay half the cost of the magic item, plus experience, to craft magic items, which takes them a number of days. Novus Utum uses different rules, so those listed rules do not apply.

Instead, players with magic item creation feats may purchase magic items which they can create at a discount. This discount is 5% for each Item Creation feat they have (up to a maximum of 25% for having all five). For example, a character with the Craft Spell Store and Craft Spell Font feats may purchase scrolls they can create (using the normal requirements of level and spells known) for a 10% discount. However, they would still pay full price for a Ring of Protection +1. If they later gain the Craft Permanent Item feat, they can from then on buy such a ring at a 15% discount, since they now have 3 Item Creation feats.

For fluff purposes, it is counted as if they created the item when purchasing with a discount, and players may detail the appearance of their item (for example, if they create Boots of Elvenkind, they might be sturdy brown leather or elegant black boots with high heels, as they please).

Special: Creating Magic Items is done as part of the characters day to day affairs. There is no need to wait X days to finish an item that costs X,000 gp, though the DM team may impose limits on items being introduced in or just before an adventure is about to start (requiring it is added after instead), at their discretion.

New Item Creation Feats

Rather than following the regular rules for crafting magic items, Novus Utum uses an alternative system to craft magic items. We have eliminated the existing item creation feats, and replaced them with a list of five.

The feats Craft Psionic Construct and Craft Construct are not available to players by default.
